Chapters 9 and 10

Last one!!!

I'm very proud of you all for working so hard on this assignment. Now I want to know your thoughts about this quote:

"When [an allegory] succeeds in its literary purpose, it leaves us with a deep indefinable feeling of truth; and if it succeeds also, as Orwell set out to do, in a political as well as artistic purpose, it leaves us also with a feeling of rebelliousness against the truth revealed" (C.M. Woodhouse 1954).

1. In your opinion, did Orwell succeed in both purposes? What is the "truth" you got from this novel?

Remember- you don't have to write 150 words. Just a sentence or 2.

Chapter 8

CHOOSE ONE

1. What are the factors that have led up to the Battle of the Windmill? Is the result a “victory”?

2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov%E2%80%93Ribbentrop_Pact#Hitler_breaks_the_Pact

-Glance over the “Non-Aggression Pact” introduction, and then read this section, entitled “Hitler breaks the Pact.”
-What are the similarities of these historical events to events that happen in Chapter 8?

Chapter 7

Pretty interesting chapter, right?

I apologize for the late posting- here it is now. Have a good weekend :)

PROMPT: In what ways does Napoleon assert his authority in this chapter? Why do you think he behaves like this? Do you find his strategy of dominance effective?

Remember, you can bring up something else from the chapter that you'd like to talk about if the conversation gets repetitive.

Keep up the good comments! They're continually getting better.

Chapter 6

Here's your prompt for Chapter 6. Remember, this isn't due until Friday (but feel free to do it as soon as you can).

CHOOSE ONE
1. "Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make a man a more clever devil." -C.S. Lewis
-How does this quote apply to Napoleon?

2. Pick an uneducated character in the novel. How has their lack of intelligence been a hindrance to them? What could they do if they were more intelligent?

Chapter 5

Chapter 5
“Political subversion depends on a subversion of logic and language.” (http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/animalfarm/section5.rhtml)

1. What does this quote mean to you?
2. How, specifically, is this true in Chapter 5?
3. Can you think of any other example, either fictional or historical, of political subversion that depended on a subversion of logic and language? (If it helps any of you, I'm thinking Harry Potter).

Chapter 4

PROMPT: Answer one or both of the following questions (they overlap a bit):

1. How do the animals behave like humans in this chapter?

2. Discuss the importance of rituals for a society. Talk about rituals in the context of Animal Farm , chapter 4, and societies in general. You can also discuss examples of rituals from our society and what they do for us.

Chapter 3

Ok, this is the first one, and it's an experiment for me too. Let's see how it goes. Do your best. If the conversation starts to get repetitive, you can bring up something else you'd like to discuss from chapters 1-3.

PROMPT: Responding to this quote on page 47, answer one or both of the following questions.

"Nobody stole, nobody grumbled over his rations, the quarrelling and biting and jealousy which had been normal features of life in the old days had almost disappeared."
1. To what extent is this true of Animal Farm at this point, and to what extent is it not true?
2. What economic system does the above quote sound like, and why?

Methacton High School

Animal Farm Blogging Homework

In order to provide for more active reading, inform and enhance our classroom discussions, and continue our classroom discussions outside of class, you will be responsible for posting a comment on our class blog at this address. Keep in mind that this type of assignment/discussion is one that you likely will participate in at some point in college. Guidelines are as follows:

1. Half of the class will post when you are assigned an even numbered chapter to read (2, 4, 6, 8, 10), and half of the class will post when you are assigned an odd numbered chapter to read (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). Each post is worth 10 points, for a total of 50 points per student.

2. The blog is a discussion. Your comment must reference/flow from the comments that precede it. I completely encourage you to bring up the things that you find important, but if you are changing the topic of the discussion you must acknowledge that you are doing so. I will start you off with a question/quote/prompt to discuss, and then I expect you to take the discussion from there. (Ever have a really long conversation with people on Facebook about a picture? Like that).

3. As the blog is a discussion, all normal rules of discussions apply. Your comments must be polite and respectful (though it’s perfectly ok to disagree with someone- just be respectful about it). Any inappropriate or silly comments will be deleted immediately and you will receive a zero for that post.

4. I expect your comments to be substantive. Posts must be at least 150 words in length, and say something more than “I agree with so-and-so.” (If you’re going to say that, at least explain why!). Feel free (in fact you are encouraged) to post appropriate media/links to other related sites on our class blog, and connect the reading to something else you’ve seen or read. (If you are bringing in outside sources, make sure you give them credit!!).

5. All comments must be posted by the end of Mod 3 of the day we are going to discuss that chapter. (Although preferably this assignment will be completed the night before). I need time to check the blog before your class.

6. I realize this is an internet assignment, but you may not use internet language. That is, no “lol,” “jk,” “u,” etc. You’re writing for school, and while your tone can be slightly more informal, your language cannot.

7. When you are responsible for posting on a particular chapter, keep in mind that you will likely be called upon in class to explain your post. Conversely, if you do not have to post for a particular chapter, you are still expected to have read and understood the chapter, and read your peers comments on the blog. (i.e. you don’t have a “night off” if you don’t have to post on the blog). Also, if you want to post on more chapters than you are assigned, please do!

8. Unless you have extenuating circumstances that you need to discuss with me, you can’t make up a missed homework post by posting on another chapter. It’s all or nothing. Go big or go home J.

I hope you enjoy this novel as much as I do! Happy blogging!

Welcome to Blogging!

Hey students of Mod 7/8! Welcome to our class blog! We now have an online forum to continue, expand, and deepen our conversations about Animal Farm- how excited are you?! Ok, maybe not as excited as I am, but hopefully you're a little intrigued about this whole thing. I certainly can't wait to read your impressive, intelligent comments that I know you are all more than capable of. So stop on by our site while you're perusing the internet, and give us your feedback about Animal Farm.

For chapters 3-10, I will be starting the conversation with a post: a question, prompt, picture, link, etc. Then it's up to you to respond! Make sure when you click on the "comment" option, you include your name so you can get credit for your post. I know it might be more comfortable to hide behind the "anonymous" option, but be brave!
