Chapter 4

PROMPT: Answer one or both of the following questions (they overlap a bit):

1. How do the animals behave like humans in this chapter?

2. Discuss the importance of rituals for a society. Talk about rituals in the context of Animal Farm , chapter 4, and societies in general. You can also discuss examples of rituals from our society and what they do for us.

  1. The animals were singing their song Beasts of England. Then they start attacking the humans like its a war and revolt. In society rituals are important because certain things need to be done on a daily basis. A ritual in society would be going to school. If nobody went to school then nobody would learn anything. The same goes for eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner which is another ritual in life. In Animal Farm the owners didnt feed the animals which was a ritual the animals were used to. When that ritual didnt happen the animals got angry and eventually have a rebellion. Rituals in this case would be the owners to take care of the animals.

    1. In chapter four the animals do seem to act like humans. First they sing the “Beasts of England” as if they were human. They sort of used it as a motivational chant, and it is a type of anthem for the animals. The other thing that made them seem like humans was how they strategized a fight plan against the humans. They also had a ceremony for the sheep that got killed during the so called “battle”, just like they do for soldiers. Another weird thing they did was deciding to shoot the gun twice a year as some sort of memorial for the Battle of Cowshed.

    2. Rituals are good for society because they give some common ground between people, gives you something you can relate to. In Animal farm they use these rituals to bond as well as to remember days from the past. Some examples would be the singing of “Beasts of England”, and the shooting of the gun twice a year.

  3. In Chapter 4, the animals show human characteristics in many ways. As word of Animal Farm spreads around, animals all over begin to rebel and disobey their owners. “Beasts of England” is sung everywhere between all the animals. After their first battle, the animals also decided to honor their dead and their heroes, as well as naming their battles. Snowball reads about Julius Caesar and learns different battle tactics, using these tactics he sets up a battle team. Boxer shows emotion for the thought to be dead stable boy, unlike Snowball who says that the only good human is a dead human. This is a very human characteristic.
Rituals are important for society because it brings people together. They also create an understanding between different types of people/animals. After their first battle the animals took the gun used by the humans and decided to shoot it twice a year.

  4. In Chapter 4 animals behave like humans by singing Beasts of England. The tune was taught by the pidgeons who were sent out by snowball and napoleon. Also the animals decided to shoot the gun twice a year as a memorial. Another is when they have a battle in which they call it the Battle of the Cowshed.
Rituals are important in society because it is a set of actions by traditions in a community. After the Battle of the Cowshed the animals decided to use the gun and shoot it twice a year.

  5. In chapter 4, the animals behave like humans in the sense that they plot their attack on the humans, just like we do when we're plotting attacks against a certain group. They also behave like humans when they have a big celebration when they're victorious. When the sheep is killed, they have a burial service, just like humans have when a soldier dies in war. They even had a flag and medals to give out for bravery.I think rituals are important because they bring that society closer. Rituals force everyone to come together and do whatever that ritual is. Also when you have rituals and traditions, it makes you always remember the significance of whatever that ritual represents. For example, like Ryan Catania said, after the Battle of Cowshed, they decided to shoot the gun twice a year. Now when they shoot that gun, they will always think of the Battle of Cowshed.

  6. In this chapter, the animals act like humans in the way that they fight back when the farmers try and take back the farm. Another way that they act like humans is when they have the funeral for the fallen sheep, the memorial of shooting the gun, and the singing of Beasts of England. All of these things show human qualities because they are all things that humans do. For example humans fight in wars, have funerals, and have memorials for different things.
One of the rituals that is mentioned in this chapter is the shooting of the gun on the 12th of October and Midsummer Day. Each of these days has a special meaning to the animals, just like the days we celebrate have special meaning to us. The other ritual that they start in this chapter is when they give out the different “ranks” to Snowball, Boxer, and the fallen sheep.

  7. The animmals behave like humans by fighting back when Mr Jones and a group of men attmepted to regain control of the farm. The animals had created a battle plan which was executed in stages. Snowball was in charge of the defense. In the aftermath they mourned the loss of any animal that was killed, gave out awards to those that distinguished themselves during the battle and established another historical moment for the farm. The gun was used as a symbol of triumph over Mr Jones and was fired twice a year. One for the anniversary of the rebellion and once for the anniversary of the battle, which was named "the battle of cowshed."

  8. In this chapter, the animals behave like humans in many ways. First of all, they behave like humans by singing Beasts of England. Usually animals don't sing so that is one reason how they act similar to humans. they used the song as motivation for them to fight the humans. another reason why they act like humans is that they strategized a battle plan, if you will, to defeat the humans. there were many different stages that were used to execute the battle. Another ritual is when they give out the specific rankings to the different animals.

Rituals are very important in society. Rituals are very spiritual and they bring everyone in a society together as one. one of the rituals in Animal Farm was when the gun was used as a symbol of triumph to Mr Jones. The gun was fired twice a year.

  9. In chapter four, the animals act similarly to humans when they plan ahead in order to protect themselves from their previous owner. Just like any country, big or small, the animals on the farm decide to come together and set up a series of attacks in the event of Mr. Jones’s return. It is as if they are creating their own army to defend themselves against their enemies, just like humans would do. In the end, their plan is put into action when Mr. Jones and neighboring farmers decide to try and take back Manor Farm. Because the animals were well prepared, they were able to defend their farm and drive out the men. Another example of the animals showing human characteristics is when one of the sheep dies from being shot. They give the sheep a proper funeral and burial just as if the animal was a human being.
